①A mid- to long-term resident who has been issued with a residence card must file an application to the Commissioner of the Immigration Services Agency for a renewal of the validity period of the residence card in accordance with the procedures provided for in Ministry of Justice Order during the period from three months prior to the expiration date of the validity period until the date on which the validity period expires (referred to in the following paragraph as "extension period") except when the validity period is stated as the expiration date of the period of stay in the residence card of the mid- to long-term resident.

②A person who is expected to have difficulty in filing the application pursuant to the provisions of the preceding paragraph within the extension period due to compelling reasons may file an application to the Commissioner of the Immigration Services Agency for an extension of the validity period of the residence card prior to the extension period in accordance with the procedures provided for in Ministry of Justice Order.

③The provisions of paragraph (2) of the preceding Article apply mutatis mutandis to cases in which the application is filed pursuant to the provisions of the preceding two paragraphs.
