A motor vehicle must not be used for operation unless its following equipment conforms to the technical standards for safety, or for pollution prevention and other conservation of the environment, prescribed by Order of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism:

devices for preventing the emission of smoke, foul-smelling gases, toxic gases, etc.;
ばい煙、悪臭のあるガス、有毒なガス等の発散防止装置
headlamps, number lamps, tail lamps, brake lamps, side lamps and other lighting equipment, and reflectors;
前照灯、番号灯、尾灯、制動灯、車幅灯その他の灯火装置及び反射器
horn and other warning equipment;
警音器その他の警報装置
direction indicators and other indicating equipment;
方向指示器その他の指示装置
rear-view mirror, windshield wipers and other equipment for securing a field of view;
後写鏡、窓拭き器その他の視野を確保する装置
speedometer, odometer and other instruments;
速度計、走行距離計その他の計器
fire extinguisher and other fire prevention equipment;
消火器その他の防火装置
internal pressure vessels and their accessory equipment;
内圧容器及びその附属装置
other motor vehicle equipment that is particularly necessary and specified by Cabinet Order.
その他政令で定める特に必要な自動車の装置
The "automated operation device" referred to in item (xx) of the preceding paragraph means a device whose principal components are sensors for detecting the state of a motor vehicle during operation and its surrounding conditions, and a computer and program for processing the information transmitted from those sensors, which are necessary to cause a motor vehicle to operate automatically by means of a program (meaning commands to a computer (including input/output devices; except in this paragraph and Article 99-3, paragraph (1), item (i), the same applies hereinafter) that are combined so as to obtain a single result; the same applies hereinafter), and which, when used under conditions attached by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for each such device, has a function that substitutes for all of the capabilities relating to perception, prediction, judgment and control involved in driving by the person who operates the motor vehicle, and is also equipped with a device for recording the information necessary for confirming the operating state of that function.
前項第二十号の「自動運行装置」とは、プログラム（電子計算機（入出力装置を含む。この項及び第九十九条の三第一項第一号を除き、以下同じ。）に対する指令であつて、一の結果を得ることができるように組み合わされたものをいう。以下同じ。）により自動的に自動車を運行させるために必要な、自動車の運行時の状態及び周囲の状況を検知するためのセンサー並びに当該センサーから送信された情報を処理するための電子計算機及びプログラムを主たる構成要素とする装置であつて、当該装置ごとに国土交通大臣が付する条件で使用される場合において、自動車を運行する者の操縦に係る認知、予測、判断及び操作に係る能力の全部を代替する機能を有し、かつ、当該機能の作動状態の確認に必要な情報を記録するための装置を備えるものをいう。
