一般用電気工作物（ いっぱんようでんきこうさくぶつ ）
Electric facilities for general use as Article 38, paragraph (1) of the Electricity Business Act defines them: electric facilities (電気工作物) installed on one premises — equipment for using electricity, and small low-voltage generating equipment whose output is below a level a Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Order (経済産業省令) sets, each connected to equipment off the premises, if at all, only through a low-voltage incoming line, and equipment that Order treats as like them — other than equipment on the same premises as larger generating equipment, or in a place that Order names as at risk of accidents from explosive or flammable substances.

自家用電気工作物（ じかようでんきこうさくぶつ ）
Electric facilities for private use as Article 38, paragraph (4) of the Electricity Business Act defines them — electric facilities (電気工作物) other than electric facilities for general use (一般用電気工作物) and those used for the electricity businesses that paragraph lists, such as transmission and distribution — leaving out small-scale electric facilities for business use (小規模事業用電気工作物), power stations, substations, demand facilities (需要設備, all the electric facilities installed on the premises where the electricity is used) with a maximum power of 500 kilowatts or more, and other facilities a Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Order (経済産業省令) sets.
電気事業法第三十八条第四項に規定する自家用電気工作物（小規模事業用電気工作物及び発電所、変電所、最大電力五百キロワット以上の需要設備（電気を使用するために、その使用の場所と同一の構内（発電所又は変電所の構内を除く。）に設置する電気工作物（同法第二条第一項第十八号に規定する電気工作物をいう。）の総合体をいう。）その他の経済産業省令で定めるものを除く。）

A Class 1 electrician (第一種電気工事士) or a Class 2 electrician (第二種電気工事士), as Article 3, paragraphs (1) and (2) define them: a person who has been issued an electrician license (電気工事士免状) of the class concerned.

A person who has been issued a certified electrical worker certificate (認定電気工事従事者認定証), and so may take part in simple electrical work (簡易電気工事) on electric facilities for private use (自家用電気工作物) without being a Class 1 electrician (第一種電気工事士).
