Chief of a District Headquarters

方面本部長(ほうめんほんぶちょう)

The head of a district headquarters (方面本部) of the Hokkaido police. The Police Act (警察法) divides Hokkaido (道) into no more than five districts (方面) and places a district headquarters in each, except the district where the Hokkaido Police Headquarters (道警察本部) stands, to handle police work in that district (Police Act, Article 51, paragraph (1)); each has a chief (Article 51, paragraph (2)). The chief works under the administration of the district's District Public Safety Commission (方面公安委員会), oversees the headquarters' work, and, on the orders of the chief of the Hokkaido Police Headquarters (道警察本部長), directs and supervises its police officials (Article 51, paragraph (3)). Under the Anti-Stalking Act, the work that Act gives the chief of the Hokkaido Police Headquarters may be left to a Chief of a District Headquarters, as a Cabinet Order (政令) provides (Anti-Stalking Act, Article 16), and a District Public Safety Commission may have one do work the Hokkaido Public Safety Commission (道公安委員会) delegated to it (Article 17, paragraph (2)).
