Social Insurance Examination Committee

A committee under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare that hears requests for re-examination (再審査請求) against the decisions of social insurance examiners (社会保険審査官), and the requests for administrative review (審査請求) that certain Acts bring to it directly, such as those against dispositions on premiums (Act on Social Insurance Examiners and the Social Insurance Examination Committee (社会保険審査官及び社会保険審査会法), Article 19; Health Insurance Act, Article 190; Employees' Pension Insurance Act, Article 91, paragraph (1)). It is made up of a chair and five members, appointed by the Minister with the consent of both Houses of the Diet (国会) from people of integrity with insight into social security and knowledge or experience of law or social insurance, and they exercise their powers independently (Articles 20 to 22 of that Act).
